With 40+ years experience and over $10 billion worth of projects, HJ Sims is one of the leading experts in underwriting financing for the senior living industry.

Herbert J. Sims & Co. is an investment banking and financial services brokerage firm established in 1935 and has been a member in good standing of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA www.finra.org) since 1946. Headquartered in Southport, Connecticut, we have eight locations nationwide.

We are a leading national underwriter of tax-exempt bonds for senior housing and long-term care providers. Sims underwrote the first tax-exempt bond issue for a long-term care facility in the United States in 1965 and has since managed over $10 billion of senior housing and long-term care bond issues. Our specialty is financing projects for the elderly, and the majority of the $500 to $700 million of new issues we bring to market each year finance such projects.

We're also the experts that other bond experts rely on. Sims is a consistent choice of leading Bond Funds and other financial institutions – as well as astute private investors.

We served as a designated banker for the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) Development Corporation from 1987 to 2001 and in 2001 joined AAHSA's Business Development Council (ADC). As AAHSA's banker, we lead educational seminars and provide finance plans and financial advisory services to non-profit long-term care providers across the country. In addition, Sims was hired by AAHSA in 2005 to refinance its outstanding debt. We are proud that 100% of the clients interviewed by ADC indicated they would use Sims for their next financing.

Sims' investment banking staff includes 15 bankers dedicated solely to financing long-term care and senior living projects. Our investment banking headquarters are in Connecticut, with other strategic locations in Florida, Maryland, New York and California

Our subsidiary and affiliated corporations give our clients access to an even broader range of services within the long-term care and senior housing field.

  • Sims Mortgage Funding originates Federal Housing Administration (FHA) insured mortgage loans for the construction, rehabilitation, acquisition and refinancing of healthcare and senior housing.
  • HJS Advisors, Inc. manages our clients' investments in acquisition financings, mezzanine loans and seed capital financings.
  • HJ Sims Investments, LLC (and affiliates) owns all or part of seven CCRCs and assisted living properties.

In addition, Sims works with the best independent consultants for derivative analysis.

The dedicated retail and institutional sales force in New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida sell all of the bonds we underwrite. We offer a wide variety of investment products including non-rated, rated and credit-enhanced bonds to both institutional and retail investors. The retail sales force also sells secondary issues and manages more than 4700 portfolios valued in excess of $1 billion.
